The theme of eco-friendly interior and natural materials in design is becoming increasingly common around the world. When decorating their projects, designers often use potted plants, therefore we have long been familiar with such names as "florariums", "phytocompositions", "smart pots" and "smart potts". Vertical gardening, in contrast, is used more in the design of office space. We decided to find out from professionals what it is, whether vertical gardening is appropriate in private interiors and what difficulties the owners of such a construction might face. Our experts: Elena Mironova, leading designer studio "Bastet", and Asya Anistratenko, head of the direction of the company RaStenia.
What types of vertical gardening are there?
Elements of vertical gardening can be: phyto walls ("living" walls), phytoconstructions, phytomodules (or phytopanels, phyto pictures), phyto partitions, phyto cabinets, phyto facades (unfortunately, not for our latitudes, but it would be great!) And - the trend of recent years - fitomebel
Vertical gardening designs divided by the types of plants that are used to create them:
- artificial (plastic flowers);
- stabilized (canned moss and stabilized flowers);
- dried flowers;
- live plants.
By the way, designs from living plants can even be edible (strawberries, lettuce, spicy herbs).
Stabilized moss has many shades and requires almost no care (except that the processing of dust). This allows the use of such designs in almost any style of premises.
However, the benefits of artificial plants do not have to wait. Therefore, they clearly do not cope with the basic idea of using vertical gardening in interiors - reducing the negative effects of the urban environment on the human body. Their role is purely decorative.
Designs from natural plantsOf course, they are more capricious in their care, but their effect on people is very positive: plants absorb noise, reduce stress and prevent aggression, as confirmed by the research of many eminent scientists.
In addition to the visual and psychologically positive effect, the plants help clean the air in the rooms. A huge amount of dirt is a product of daily human life and signs of repair. Furniture fumes (chipboard, resin, paint, glue), aerosols, sweat, skin and hair, office equipment, and so on - all this makes indoor air 2-4 times dirtier than outside. Plants process these toxins and use them in their metabolism, that is, destroy.
What do you need for arranging phyto walls?
Living plant designs needed shine, and the lighting must be correct, otherwise the plants may hurt and even die. The body of structures, of course, may have a built-in lighting system, but more often than not, such lighting is not enough. Therefore, it is better to use the ceiling light, which must be calculated by a specialist.
For vertical gardens you need to connect to the electrical network. And for large phyto walls, you may need to connect to plumbing and sanitary.
Autowatering mandatory for phytowall and phytomodules with hydroponic landing method, and systems on the ground can be without it.
Plants in phyto walls can be planted in two ways: "on the ground"and hydroponic methodWhereas only the hydroponic method is characteristic of the phytomodules. More information about them can be found on the websites of companies engaged in vertical gardening.
Naturally, any designs have their own dimensions. So, for example, the phytopressing can have a width of about 40 cm (depending on height), a phyto-pattern about 15 cm, and a phytowall - about 20 cm. In each case, these dimensions are individual and must be taken into account.
Variants of use phytowall
So, talk about the theory. We now turn to the ideas of interior decoration with phytoconstructions.
Lighting. If at the design of the phyto walls use for illumination not only ordinary lamps, but also colored ones, you can achieve very interesting visual effects.
Comfortable sleeping conditions. The phytoconstruction, located in the bedroom, saturates the air with oxygen, which contributes to excellent well-being: a person gets better sleep, and less time is required for sleep.
Rooms without windows. Psychological comfort is undoubtedly the most important. But not always in our small apartments can accommodate all the zones that you want. Therefore, sometimes it turns out that the room has one window and different zones, one of which does not reach natural light. Here comes to the aid wall phytomodule. Of course, it does not give natural light, but it does not take up much space and creates comfortable conditions. And, of course, a big plus wall phytomodule: it can be removed from the wall and placed elsewhere, while the phytowall cannot be easily dismantled.
Zoning Mobile phytomodules are very convenient when we deal with a transformer room, consisting, for example, of several zones, each of which is used at a certain time or for specific tasks. A stationary phyto-partition will help to visually separate one zone from another, and the living green of plants will be pleasing to the eye and compensate for the lack of moisture and oxygen.
The radius of the phytowall will help to decorate the bearing columns, which, as experience shows, are often located not very comfortable for layouts.
Phytoarticles. Their sizes are acceptable even for small rooms. The walls of the body are phyto-paintings wide and visually look like a picture frame. They can be used for rooms of different styles - from modern to classical, because the body can be decorated even with a baguette.
Space-occupying phyto walls and phyto-paintings are ideal for children. Per square meter phyto walls can accommodate up to 40 plants. One phytoconstruction can improve the microclimate in the room where children are often located. Biologists will help pick up plants that successfully absorb volatile toxins. Always wet the phyto walls will help to cope with the dryness of the air in the room.
So, having gone deep into the study of the subject of vertical gardening, we realized that it copes well with the solution of environmental problems in cities (lack of oxygen, purification and moistening of the air). In addition, a variety of phytoconstructions have great potential for decorating interiors. So feel free to take this idea into service!
